Transitions

The puppies have taken over the laundry room AND the garage.
A couple of them ventured outside.
Half are sleeping ON Jane’s bed. The others still like their low-to-the-ground blankets.
They’ve figured out how to eat solid food out of the million bowls and the litter box is a big hit.
I’m exhausted, trying to meet their needs. But the more I can respond, the more they thrive.
Two of the pups have spent the last week practicing their eye contact. They stare at the nice lady delivering food bowls. Today, they included a ‘sit’ with that lovely eye contact. Suddenly 3 more pups joined in, realizing that they get extra attention and food bowls placed next to them. Smart puppies.
The 2 smallest can scramble up onto the raised bed, but are a little worried about climbing off. Instead of carrying them off the bed, I placed low boxes and piles of blankets to form a step so that they can do it themselves. As soon as they figured it out, they strutted around like the royalty they are.
And Jane. Sweet Jane. Since the puppies have taken over the lower level, she gets the stairs and landing. I haven’t seen her sleep this deeply since she arrived 6 weeks ago. She’s also hanging out with our dogs and going for walks. Her transition from full-time mom to beloved family pet is happening.
Our Christmases have included foster pets for the last 15 years. Everyone pitches in – it’s what we do, it’s who we are.
